Town link up with Council to tackle pollution and promote sustainability
The Club is delighted to be joining forces with Ipswich Borough Council to re-launch the Think Smart, Think Blue, Recycle campaign.
The initiative, which originally began in March 2020 but was disrupted by the impact of Covid-19, seeks to educate and raise awareness of the importance of recycling and the impact of plastic pollution.
In the last 60 years, six billion tonnes of plastic waste has been created, and only nine percent of it has been recycled. Every year we throw away enough plastic to circle the world five times.
In Ipswich, 1,800 tonnes of recyclable materials are put in black rubbish bins by households every year – that’s the equivalent of 142 double decker buses.
The Club has made, and will continue to take, steps to become more sustainable, some of which are listed below:
Supporters will see lamppost banners and branded up bins in the town centre as well as at Portman Road which will carry key messages about the importance of recycling, while bin lorries have once again been wrapped in Think Smart, Think Blue, Recycle branding which includes the Club mascots Bluey and Crazee.
Town will also be working with the council to educate the younger generations by running assemblies at partner schools of the Ipswich Town Foundation, the first of which is scheduled to take place during Recycle Week at the end of the month.
The Foundation also took part in yesterday's recycling event on the Cornhill, while the Council will have a presence in the FanZone for the home fixture against Cambridge United on Saturday, 10 September, to promote key messages with a footballing theme.
"Recycling is important now more than ever as we work towards Net Zero ambitions for our town and a sustainable future for the benefit of the environment," Cllr Phil Smart, Ipswich Borough Council, Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said following the re-launch of the campaign.
"We have a wonderful town, with wonderful people. Ipswich Town supporters are a large part of that, so joining with the Club to encourage recycling messages is a great way to encourage our community to get on board, and to ‘Think Smart, Think Blue,’ and recycle as much waste as we can."
Cameron Burgess, Conor Chaplin, Kane Vincent-Young and Christian Walton appeared in a video to promote the campaign and help highlight just some of the worrying statistics surrounding recycling, and to illustrate how we can all play our part to build a more sustainable future.
