Fort Wayne-based Aardvark Straws, which bills itself as the country’s only paper straw maker, has been acquired. The new owner, Wisconsin-based Hoffmaster Group Inc., says it plans to "aggressively" boost production in northeast Indiana as a national movement away from plastic straws continues to materialize.

Hoffmaster says it has acquired all Aardvark operating rights and one of two Fort Wayne facilities owned by the former parent of Aardvark, Precision Products Group Inc. PPG will retain control of the other, which doesn’t produce paper straws. A spokesperson says Hoffmaster plans to bring on the entire Aardvark staff.

Hoffmaster Foodservice Division President Andy Romjue says "this is an important acquisition for Hoffmaster as Aardvark straws are a natural extension of our premium portfolio and complement our line of environmentally responsible products. In the coming months, we will aggressively ramp up Aardvark’s manufacturing capacity to meet the rapidly accelerating demand for paper straws while conducting a full review of the business needs to optimally fold it into the current Hoffmaster infrastructure. We are committed to being a reliable supply source for paper drinking straws in the foodservice market."
