"Grapefruit is explosively refreshing, especially when chased with the sting of ginger." Picture by Susan Jane White.
Nostril breathing is the hottest new trend to have seized my (very short) attention span. According to science journalist James Nestor, this simple technique can improve health and longevity. Plus it’s free! Nestor has even managed to arrest his lifelong snoring habit by tuning his breath into his loyal nostrils. Longevity and bedroom points? That’s a double win.
H owever, should that fail, here’s a tipple to make you think you might just live forever — I’m all for immortality.
Grapefruit is explosively refreshing, especially when chased with the sting of ginger. Think of it as a pacemaker for your toes and your tonsils. It also contains powerful immune-boosting antioxidants, not to mention weight-loss benefits. You could even make this slushie with blood orange, grapefruit and fresh chilli, which tastes like cosmic spillage from my NutriBullet.
Makes 1 large glass or 2 small glasses You will need: 2 pink grapefruits Fistful of ice cubes (feel free to freeze leftover green tea into ice cubes) Small amount of freshly grated ginger
1 Juice your grapefruits. Freshly squeezed citrus, as opposed to store-bought juice, is so much tastier, livelier, and devoid of processing. Compost the skins. Alternatively, air-dry the skins in a very low oven of 40C, 104F to turn them into natural firelighters for the winter months ahead. Store the air-dried citrus peels somewhere dry — they are a fab chemical-free way to fuel your fire.
2 Using a powerful high-speed blender, add the grapefruit juice to your ice cubes and freshly grated ginger. Blast in the blender until slushie-like and slurpable.
3 Pour the slushie into one large glass or two small glasses and serve with a paper milkshake straw (regular paper straws are a little tricky with crushed ice so you want the big fat ones here).
